研究実績の概要 |
The objective of this research was to assess the urban sprawl quantitatively in selected South and Southeast Asian cities and try to understand the pattern and dynamics of urban sprawl. The expansion was measured under 2 conditions; how cities are expanding in the area and the rate of expansion over a period of time. The work was conducted in 2 phases. Researcher has used Yogyakarta city of Indonesia as the case study of the first phase. In the second phase, we used five medium-sized cities with population between 1-5 million to understand urban expansion. The measurements were taken for a period of 2 decades depending on availability of land-use data. Expansion was evaluated using multiple measurements. Spatial metrics and density of urbanization were used to measure urban expansion across the city region. Authors found that the growth in the periphery of the region was fragmented. The second observation was that the existing urban areas are growing as infill growth. Later, author has compared the growth patterns observed in this study with the rate of urban expansion over 2 decades. The rate of expansion in the existing areas is higher than the expansion in the periphery and happening as infill growths. These findings stress measures to preserve green areas within the city. Author is expecting to publish these findings in an international scientific journal. The data and background information gather during this study was compiled to publish on the web for public use as proposed in the original research grant application.

理由
The research work conducted during the last 2 years mainly concentrated on assessing urban expansion in South and Southeast Asian cities using multiple measurements. The original research proposal has proposed studying five major cities in the region. During the study author has found that it is essential to understand urban expansion in the medium-sized cities because the population forecasts suggest that a higher increase in medium-sized cities in the region. Therefore, in addition to the major cities proposed in the original research plan, five medium-sized cities were also examined as case studies. The second objective of the original research proposal was to understand the relationship between urban planning practice and the urbanization. Therefore, studying a wide variety of cases from each planning environment is important to understand the actual impact. The research work of the last 2 year, analyzed five medium-sized cities in the region and the Jakarta city from the original proposal. Author has completed data preparation and analysis work for five medium-sized cities and ready to publish the results in an international journal within months. In the original proposal author proposed publishing data and background in formation on the web for public use. Data of the current work were compiled for the publishing on the web and the website will be accessible online from the first week of May 2015. There is a slight delay in the analysis of five major cities proposed in the original proposal, which will be expedited and planned to complete within the next 6 months.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
The first goal of this year is publishing the research findings of the work carried out during the last 2 years. Work related to the Yogyakarta city of Indonesia is already submitted to an international journal and awaiting final review results. This work was expanded to five more medium-sized cities and expected to submit to an international journal by early June 2015. First 2 months from April 2015 will be dedicated to completing manuscripts of scientific papers. The web site that will introduce the research work will be published during the second week of May. Author will update the web site regularly with new information and introduce current status of the research. One of the new goals set for this years research plan is introducing current status of urbanization and future research needs outside of the findings of this research on the web site. Author is expecting this will improve the usefulness of the website as a platform of compiling publicly available information. Remaining research work of the original proposal includes studying the relationship of planning practice and urbanization process. This work is planned for the latter half of the 2015 and early 2016. Author suggests that the initial in-depth study of current urbanization process is important to examine the relationship of planning practice and urbanization process. Therefore visit to study areas are delayed and planned for the first half of the 2015 before undertaking the analysis of planning practices in study areas. The research findings from this study will be published early 2016.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
Unused money from the last year was originally allocated as travel cost of the site visit. After a revision in the research plan these trips are planned for the first six months of this year. Therefore, unused money from last year and additional funds from the current year will be used for site visits. Money available for this year will be used to publish research results. Author is preparing to publish his work three times this year. The work of the last year will be submitted by June and August. And the remaining work will be published in early 2016. The web site proposed in the grant application will need a hosting fee. The web site will be published from May 2015.

次年度使用額の使用計画 |
Author is planning to visit Vietnam, Indonesia and India during the first half of this year to study the urban planning and urban expansion. Author will gather documents and records of planning practice and interview experts during this trip. Parallel to the above trip, author will compile the research findings of the past year and submit to an international journal for publication. Funds available for this year will be sued to cover publication cost and the cost of manuscript preparation. The website of the research will be published from the second week of May and will need an annual hosting fee. Remaining research of comparing urban expansion and planning practice is planned for the second half of the 2015. The publishing of results of the full study is planned in early 2016.
