研究概要 |
By elucidating the mechanisms that drive the productivity of marine macrophyte ecosystems, we will be able to develop monitoring systems and methodologies to restore, expand, and protect these valuable areas. In the first year of this project, we have been able to develop a system that can monitor the dissolved oxygen concentrations, underwater and surface photosynthetic photon flux densities, water temperature, chlorophyll-a concentrations, and surface wind velocities of coastal areas occupied by Sargassum spp. and Zostera marina communities. Furthermore, we are steadily constructing a model that can estimate the gross ecosystem productivity of these ecosystems using a state-space formulation of oxygen dynamics and Bayesian inference. Through these achievements, we have been able to infer the seasonal changes in gross ecosystem production of these ecosystems in Omura Bay, Nagasaki, Japan. Our results show that the system is providing enough information to show that fluctuations in gross ecosystem production is associated with changes in the biomass of Sargassum spp. and Zostera marina, as expected. A number of presentations have been given regarding these results.

理由
We are steadily collecting data from Omura Bay, Nagasaki, however our efforts to collect data from Kagoshima Bay, Kagoshima are inadequate. Poor weather and timing are a few of the problems encountered. Nevertheless, we have been able to prepare the field site at Kagoshima Bay and have deployed the system to collect data in early 2014. Additionally, although we have collect data on the nutrient conditions of the field site, a thorough analysis remains to be completed.

次年度の研究費の使用計画 |
Funds remained at the end of the fiscal year, because we were unable to conduct field work in Kagoshima as planned, and that unplanned need to repair and replace equipment (Aricle Costs) occurred. The remaining funds are planned to be used to fund Travel and Article Costs.
