研究概要 |
In May of 2013 three schools in northern Japan were contacted and the purpose of the study was explained to the school authorities, teachers and parents. A total of 15 students from 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades were successfully recruited for the study. In July the pilot study was carried out. Students were first given an L1 English test to determine their literacy levels in their L1. There then followed two tests of L2 Japanese word recognition in order to establish a baseline for the overall experiment. The two tests were: (1) A test of kana lexical comprehension consisting of visually familiar words, unfamiliar words, and non words to assess L2 Japanese word recognition. (2) A contextualized reading test consisting of four short texts and comprehension questions. Both tests were administered by computer and students were randomly tested in groups of five. The results from both tests were subject to series of statistical analyses to establish the initial data with which the results from the subsequent longitudinal tests can be compared and evaluated. In January of 2014 the tests were repeated with the same students and the results were compared with the initial pilot test. Although only two tests have been completed so far, interim results suggest an orthographic transfer effect in developmental word recognition particularly with younger students.

理由
In the first year of the research both of the planned studies were carried out. The first study was to establish a baseline of data on word recognition and lexical familiarity in order to provide a comparison with subsequent studies. Although only two studies have been conducted so far, the initial evidence suggests that in L2 Japanese word recognition strategies are developmental, and that there is an orthographic transfer effect from L1 English to L2 Japanese. However, so far the data has not shown any clear evidence of whether or not the orthographic interference of L1 English on L2 Japanese diminishes with age.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
IN 2014 the plans for the research are to carry out two more studies of the same 15 students. In May I will travel to the schools again to gain permission for this year's research. Also in May I will present the interim results from my first series of tests at the annual conference of the 日本第二言語習得学会 in Kwansei University. In June I will conduct the third series of tests. I will then analyze these results and compare them with the results from last year's studies. In November I will present my interim results at the annual conference of the 全国語学教育学会 in Tsukuba University. In December I will conduct study number four. Following this I will analyze all the data gathered from the four longitudinal studies and determine whether or not word recognition strategies are developmental and whether or not L1 English orthographic interference on L2 Japanese literacy diminishes as students gain proficiency in Japanese. In February I will prepare my results for publication and presentation. In March I will hold a workshop for teachers from the participating schools explaining the significance of the research data and what practical effects this may have on their teaching and students learning. I will also make the results of my survey available online via my university's homepage.

次年度の研究費の使用計画 |
I had budgeted for ten notebook computers to use in my research. However I was able to borrow and use several computers from my institution so I only needed to buy one new computer. In addition, the students took the computer based word recognition tests in groups of five rather than ten as originally planned, so I did not need to buy as many computers. In addition, due to delays in shipping, the specialized software I ordered from the United States was not delivered in 2013 and so was not included in the 2013 expenses. I will use the incurring amount for the last fiscal year to pay for the specialized software which is due to arrive in June. The remainder of the money I will use to purchase a replacement notebook computer as there is a problem with the keyboard on one of the computers I am currently using.
