The research activities in AY2014 are summarized as follows. 1. Follow-up field survey: the Principal Investigator (PI hereafter) conducted a follow-up field survey between August 2 and August 19, 2014. The survey took place in the Heihe River basin, northwestern China. During the survey, we found that, in addition to the small-scale farmland transfer (tudi liuzhuan, transfer of the farmland use rights) among farmers, contract-based farmland transfers between farmers and agricultural companies/cooperatives have been promoted by local government. The land transfer may give substantial impacts on agricultural water use in the future because agricultural company / cooperative owners appear to introduce water-saving technologies more actively after use rights transfer. 2. Econometric Analysis and paper writing: one core pillar of this project is to build a CGE-Household Micro-Simulation Model for policy discussions of integrated water resources management. However, the modelling calibration has not led to desirable results as the PI expected. This is partially due to the low quality of household survey results, therefore, the members applied ecological information-based approach (specifically, ecological network analysis) instead to finalize main findings of this project while we are still working on CGE model. 3. Project wrap-up meeting: the PI and other assisting members had a project warp-up meeting during February 28 and March 2 in China. A consensus has been reached that the research collaboration will be continued even after the project completes.
