研究概要 |
The main purpose of the research is to examine innovation diffusion in an emerging industry using a multidisciplinary approach. As planned, I was able to complete a new panel dataset on biotech crop innovations. In developing the theoretical framework, I built on theories in organization science and political science. Bridging these two disciplines allow me to explore cross-national diffusion of biotech crop innovations. I have completed my preliminary analysis on this topic, and presented my research findings at academic conferences. In addition, I have analyzed the diffusion of cloud computing in emerging countries by jointly considering innovation traits of cloud computing and institutional characteristics of emerging countries. A work-in-progress paper on this topic was presented at an academic conference, and a revised version of this paper was submitted for book-chapter publication consideration.

理由
My project is progressing more smoothly than initially planned. Although I planned to continue collecting data on biotech crop innovations until September 2014, I was able to finish collecting my data in 2013. Moreover, I was able to complete my preliminary analysis and present my research outputs at academic conferences, which I initially planned to complete in 2014. In addition, I was able to complete research outputs using another type of innovation―cloud computing. Cloud computing is an innovation that is receiving much attention among companies and policy makers. Yet, we still lack studies about how it is diffused across countries. Hence, I developed a paper on the diffusion of cloud computing to fill this gap, and contribute to the innovation diffusion literature.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
I will complete my first paper on the cross-national diffusion of biotech crop innovations. I will visit more experts in biotech crops in 2014 to receive feedback on my research findings. In 2013, I have made contact with some experts from the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Applications who are willing to extend further help in clarifying biotech crop issues and introducing me to other experts in the field. After further revising my first paper, I will submit it for publication consideration in an academic journal. In addition, I will develop another paper using my panel data on biotech crop innovations. In the second paper, I plan to use network theories and analysis to investigate how the diffusion pattern of early innovations influences the diffusion pattern of succeeding innovations.

次年度の研究費の使用計画 |
I utilized books and online journals from our university library instead of buying books, and did not buy software in order to save money this year and attend a workshop in 2014, as explained below. I allotted more funds for year 2014 in order to attend a workshop on network theories and analysis in Kentucky, US. This workshop will help me learn more about network theories and analytical tools that will help me develop my second paper on innovation diffusion using network theories and analysis. In 2014, I also plan to present my research output at an Academy of Management conference and visit the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Applications office in Manila, Philippines in order to conduct interviews with experts in biotech crops and receive feedback on my first paper. I will also purchase software, such as McAfee anti-virus and Adobe professional. The remaining funds will be used for honorarium (research assistantship) and office supplies.
