Lightweight metal matrix composites reinforced with metallic glass fibers with unique structural features and enhanced mechanical behavior have been developed using a sophisticated selection process of commercial lightweight alloys as matrices and glass forming alloys as reinforcing phases. Metallic glass fibers that include nano-wires, micro-wires and micron size particles were fabricated by gas atomization. Optimization of the synthesis processes has allowed the fabrication of composites with low porosity. The addition of metallic glass fiber reinforcements in Al based matrices was found to increase more than two times the mechanical strength of the composites while retaining considerable plastic strains before fracture between 12 and 25%. The significant strengthening of the novel nano-composites was achieved via micromechanistic-mechanisms that tune the properties of the matrix (indirect strengthening) and through direct load transfer from the matrix to the amorphous fibers.
