The goal of this research was to develop the concept of ecologically appropriate communicative language teaching for novice English teachers. In the final year, I solidified a qualitative methodology for tracking the development of novice English teachers. This methodology was described in the article "Methodological lessons learned from conducting reflexive linguistic ethnography" published in the "Doing Research in Applied Linguistics and 19th English in South-East Asia Conference 2017 Proceedings." The methodology requires the video recording of teacher classes and subsequent interviews of the teachers. For the video recordings, the methodology involves the use of the software Transana. Class videos are first segmented into scenes. Particular scenes are then selected as critical incidents, which is an event whose outcome can challenge preconceived notions of CLT. The post-class interview is coded and compared with the class video recording to identify the critical incident as well as the teacher's interpretation of it. By recording critical incidents that occurred over the span of 18 months as well as both the teachers and researcher's interpretation of them, it was possible to attain a valid description of the teachers' development as well as a plausible explanation of environmental factors contributing to it.
