This research has focused on the rDzogs chen theory of the three gnoses (jJAna, ye shes). During the first year I have surveyed the literature of the 17 tantras of Man ngag sde, as well as the works of Klong chen pa (1308-1364) systematizing them, and then works of later authors like PrajJnArazmi (1514-1584), 'Jigs med gling pa (1730-1798), 'Jam dbyangs mKhyen brtse'i dbang po (1820-1892) and 'Jam mgon Kong sprul (1813-1899). During the second year, I have considerably deepened this analysis. The most important sources are the rDzogs chen tantras and Klong chen pa's works. I have established that later authors were generally following the great systematization of Klong chen pa. So I have realized a selection of passages of Klong chen pa's works where he defines the three gnoses, particularly in the Theg pa'i mchog rin po che'i mdzod, but also in twelve other smaller texts. Then I have analyzed his quotations of rDzogs chen tantras. I discovered that if the Man ngag sde tantras where the texts showing the most refined theory of the three gnoses, actually other tantras presented proto-theory of the three gnoses, particularly the very important tantra of the Kun byed rgyal po. As for the philosophical analysis in connection with MahAyAna and VajrayAna sources, I have analyzed how it is articulated with the theory of the three Buddha-bodies (trikAya, sku gsum).
