研究実績の概要 |
In this research we find that the notions of design for sustainability are not clear either in the industrial design field or in the design education field. Studies of design education in the sustainability context are lacking, as are practical activities for students that encourage it. These points are the main obstacles to promote education on design for sustainability. Given these facts, an undergraduate student design team was examined to find members’ activities and attitudes towards designing sustainable products. Students met real-world sustainability issues, providing a great opportunity for them to discuss their ideas and concepts with their team members as well as the public. This experience helped clarify the principles and barriers to design education for sustainability. During the activities, students showed an inclination toward the design context, re-design and socio-cultural approaches. The inherent skills of students justified the inclination toward the design context but not toward the sustainability context. Analyzing the curricula on industrial design of 227 Japanese universities, we found that few universities have introduced ecodesign topics into their programs. By contrast, in foreign universities, sustainability issues play an important role in design fields, offering courses for both Bachelor’s and Master’s students. The results of research have been detailed in the papers: Practical Experience for Sustainable Design and Exploring Design Education for Sustainability; a Case of Undergraduate Design Students Team Learning Sustainable Design.

理由
The progress of the research plan for 2014 has been rather smooth. Quality aspects have been explored more than quantity aspects in the papers described in the previous section. In those papers, evidence on quantity was explored through the facts and viewpoints of participants. Quantifying the aspects of sustainability design is one of the main problems when researching design science. The present research plan involved socio-cultural (attitude, creativity and inspiration) and technical aspects (design and production). Barriers to showing evidence of quantity in sustainability design research are one topic that needs to be discussed in detail by the academic community. Scientific research methods for sustainability issues must be reviewed because the basic principle of sustainability (sustainable development) is not concerned with what exists but with what ought to be. As described in the previous section, design for sustainability is not clear in both the industrial design and the design education fields, while experts on design education in the sustainability context are lacking. These facts justify the long wait to review the papers submitted by the academic design community in Japan as well as the limited research produced thus far in the design for sustainability field. Design for sustainability is not well established and is considered to be a new area in design science.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
Based on the results of the research plan for 2014, the methods and tools used for learning and teaching design for sustainability in foreign universities (United Kington, Wales, The Netherlands and Australia). will be studied in detail in 2015. The available methods and tools on industrial design courses for ecodesign and sustainable design in Japanese universities will also be studied in detail and compared with those of national and foreign countries. The research will review the advantages and disadvantages of the current methods and tools for industrial designers and design educators at an academic and a professional level. As a pedagogical approach, an innovative tool based on sustainability principles will be applied. Further, new elements (not included in the traditional ecodesign tool) will be explored and evaluated by students and experts by using media on learning and information of design for sustainability. These could be used to stimulate, encourage and motivate students and industrial designers into rethinking sustainability approaches during the initial phase of project development. This will be focused on users, sustainable consumption principles and eco-services to explore visual and intuitive interactions, with easy accessibility and understanding. Further, it might even stimulate new ideas and solutions by using concrete examples and future sustainable scenarios.
