研究実績の概要 |
I published a collection of essays, British Romanticism in a European Context, the result of a previous ELSJ symposium (Kobe 2009), and a panel at Romantic Prospects (Neuchatel 2012). The focus on the relation between Romanticism and contemporary definitions of cultural identity has been continued in a variety of projects developing the debates and scholarly networks established by the 2014 conference, Romantic Connections, at the University of Tokyo. As an example of regional collaboration, the previous co-edited volume: with the University of Hong Kong, Asian Crossings Travel Writing on China, Japan and South-East Asia (2008) resulted in an invitation to contribute an essay on Isabella Bird to New Directions in Travel Writing Studies; this became the basis for a symposium on Bird at the University of Tokyo, papers from which will be published as a forthcoming special issue of Studies in Travel Writing, co-edited with Dr Laurence Williams. Additional essays on Singapore literature, post-colonial lyric and the genre of travel-writing have been completed, and will be published in 2017.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
Research activity in 2016-17 will be centred on cross-cultural interaction in the Romantic period and later nineteenth century, with particular focus on Japan and South-East Asia, in the context of recent debates on world literature and translation ethics. I will also seek to develop regional links and possibilities for future collaboration with other major Pacific Rim universities, through conferences, graduate exchanges and other forms of scholarly liaison.
