In FY2015, we had developed a new set of techniques for analyzing phases of strongly coupled quantum field theories. The result, in the simplest cases, was a set of theories of relativistic goldstone bosons nonlinearly realizing the underlying quantum number. In FY2016, we had planned to apply our techniques to compute operator dimensions and other observables in a wide range of complicated conformal field theories, including the worldsheet theory of the planar QCD string, and various strongly coupled CFT in three and higher dimensions. We have done this as anticipated, resulting in two papers on the behavior of the spinning QCD string at large angular momentum, as well as two preprints strongly coupled CFT in three dimensions. In addition, we have attained results exceeding those anticipated in our original plan. By considering a wider set of conformal theories (such as Chern-Simons theory coupled to matter) and taking different ratios of spin and internal global symmetry quantum numbers, we have discovered a larger set of phases and effective theories than we had expected. In particular, some of these effective theories spontaneously break rather complicated patterns of Poincare', super-Poincare', and internal symmetries, resulting in goldstone actions more general than any currently known. The reason we had not anticipated the discovery of this wider set of phases, is because the corresponding effective theories had not yet been written down by anyone! Subsequently, other research groups in Europe and the US have deepened and generalized our results.

理由
Together with my collaborators, we have discovered a far richer pattern of phases at large quantum number than originally anticipated. By taking different combinations of quantum numbers large in different ratios, we have uncovered a wider variety of effective theories than we had dared hope at the outset of our project. As a result, there is a larger and more interesting space of theories to map out, that will result in a larger and more interesting set of published research results.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
(A) Underspending travel funds in FY2016 due to traveling on an overlapping grant (Brain Circulation Program) (B) Research results better and more extensive than expected, delaying the write-up and planned seminars and conference presentations, due to there being a longer and moreinteresting set of results to present.
