This project, we developed novel amine-based new task specific ionic liquids (TSILs) for the recovery of CO2 from post-combustion flue gases that will achieve a significant increase in CO2 working capacity with a reduction in cost. The novel TSIL absorbents are neutral molecules which react with CO2 to form an ionic liquid, and subsequently modest elevations in temperature reverse the reaction and yield pure CO2 for disposal. Completed all designed TSILs synthesis and their CO2 capture performances optimization. We identified several high performance TSILs that will give higher absorption rate, high cyclic capacity and consume the minimal amount of energy. For energy efficient CO2 capture, we are incorporating hydroxyethyl and hindered alkyl substituents in the TSILs that can tune reaction mode. 13C NMR spectroscopy was used to analyze the CO2-loaded TSIL solutions carbamate (COO-) and bicarbonate (HCO3-) species identification. By incorporation amino functionalized group both cationic and anionic parts of the TSILs we substantially increased CO2 loading and cyclic capacity. Four medium hindered amino-functionalized ionic liquids with excellent CO2 performance were identified.
