In June 2016, I presented "A Translational Comics Text and its Translation: Maus in Japanese”on translational texts and the notion of contemporaneous translation at the international conference Rethinking Peace Studies held at ICU 1-4 June. The "Transformations"-themed international conference of the International Association for the Study of Irish Literatures (IASIL) in Japan, held at ICU 14-15 October 2016, the translation of poetry from Irish to Japanese and performed on western and Japanese instruments was introduced and performed to participants of the conference, including NIC Galway Professor of Drama and Theatre Studies Patrick Lonergan, and filmmaker Alan Gilsenan. In January 2017, theatre director and translator Dr Kanchuka Dharmasiri of the University of Peradaniya, Sri Lanka, came to ICU for two weeks to work with students on performative translations of Yada Eriko's manga Sora no Ito. Inspiring collaborative media translations of the manga grew out of this visit. Dr Dharmasiri, along with film researcher Dr Isabel Arredondo of SUNY and filmmaker Linda Ohama, took part in the Contemporaneous Translation Special Symposium: Film and Its Translations: Voices, Technology, Viewing, held for 200 students and members of the public on 19 January 2017 at ICU. Publications this year include Maus: A Translational Comics Text, published in Translation Review 95.1 (2016): 67-77.

理由
The progress of my research on the notion of contemporaneous translation has proceeded very smoothly in terms of development of theoretical notions, applications, and publications, I have some remaining funds left which I will use to attend an international conference to present my findings.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
I have very exciting plans for future work based on this research. This work will animate a paper I am writing for The Handbook of Feminist Translation, a transnational project which is considering women and gender construction in interlingual translation. I will be writing about the translation of young women in Japanese works and Japanese translations for young women readers. I am also a co-organizer of a panel on theatre translation (with Dr Geraldine Brodie of University College London and Dr Marie Nadia Karsky of Universite de Paris 8) for IATIS 2018, which will be held at Hong Kong Baptist University; I plan to present on Performing Manga in Media Translation. I will be working with Dr Nela Novarro of Rutgers University and Daniel Fuentes Fernandez on how to apply contemporaneous translation in the peace studies classroom and apply transformative pedagogy in the translation classroom.
