研究実績の概要

1. The second year of this research project proceeded very smoothly in accordance with the original research plan. Further visits to overseas programs at university institutes in Los Angeles, U.S.A proved to be significant in two main areas: 1) to see firsthand how the subject of intercultural business communication is taught and 2) to interview key educators in this field. As a result, a vast amount of data was collected that will prove useful in the final design of intercultural business communication courses.
2. Through the cooperation of the America Chamber of Commerce in Japan, three guest lectures were invited to Nanzan University to talk on the cultural intelligence required to work in foreign affiliates in Japan. Each lecture was video recorded and is currently being edited for inclusion as reference material on a dedicated course homepage. Moreover, the data collected from these activities is being added to the corpus and proposed course material. Additionally, we were able to pilot a work experience course at five cooperating companies where students had the chance to work in English and hone their intercultural understanding.
3. Stage II has concluded at an equally satisfactory level as did Stage I. The amount of data collected has allowed the researchers to further work on the design of a proposed intercultural business communication curriculum, including online learning.

理由

The project is proceeding rather well. The first piloting of the guest lecture and work experience course focusing on intercultural communication skills in the workplace was successfully implemented. Feedback from the students and participating companies was positive. In Stage III, this will be implemented again with the aim of fine-tuning the course as well as allowing us to collect more data for course material development.

今後の研究の推進方策

(1) In the final stage, two main objectives have been set: a) finalization of course material--classroom and online, and b) further piloting of the guest lecture series and work experience program through the ongoing support of the American Chamber of Commerce in Japan.
(2) During the final year, a last round of interviews of students and foreign affiliate companies in Japan will be conducted to make sure data saturation is achieved. This will allow us to do any final fine-tuning of material.
(3) In terms of research output, the researchers will also present results on what has been achieved so far at the 3rd International Conference on Teaching and Education in Barcelona in June, 2016.

The main and co-investigators were able to purchase enough research material and conduct research trips with a small amount of research funds in surplus.

The incurring amount in the final year will be used to fine-tune and complete course material.
