研究実績の概要 |
My research achievements to date involve review of secondary source material as well as archival visits to various libraries including the International Affairs Institute in Rome and Aristotle University in Greece. Moreover, I have conducted several presentations that were done through a TED talk as well as at Aristotle University in Greece. Throughout this period, I have also been researching in great depth the history of liberal war. Such research has allowed me to gain a better understanding of the current situation in contemporary society. In connection to this, I have done research on the Cold War because much of the rhetoric used in the Cold War parallels that of the Global War on Terror. In order to understand these parallels better I conducted an interview with Samuel Abraham in Slovakia who is an expert of Soviet Relations. As well, I undertook a visit to the Museum of Communism in Prague to do archival research on the Spartakaids - the Soviet version of the Olympics during the Cold War.

理由
My research is progressing in the mostly expected manner. I have done a thorough historical examination and analysis of the inter-subjective relationship between media and war. This includes: the role of the printing press during the religious wars in Europe, the introduction of photography as a racial marker and legitimizing mechanism of Empire, the influence of newspapers on the American civil war, the strategic impact of wireless telegraphy on the battlefield during WWI, radio drama and political imaginary during the interwar years, the influence of newsreels in mobilizing society during WWII, the impact of television on what would later be known as ‘the living room wars’ of Vietnam, and the commercial and ‘real time’ nature of 24/7 TV cable news in both Gulf Wars. Finally, War 2.0 - the rise of participatory social media platforms (Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and Live Leaks) and consequently, their appropriation by state and non-state adversaries in conflicts such as the Arab Spring and the Global War on Terror.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
In the year 2015, I will continue by research by focusing on issues surrounding surveillance. As such my research will explore the development of organized observation within society. I will investigate and analyze the evolution of surveillance as a mechanism of social control and progress. I will trace an historical arc across various time periods (Ancient Times, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the Enlightenment, the Age of Empire, the Industrial Revolution, WWI and WWII, the Cold War, and finally, the post-9/11 era of Global Surveillance).
My goal at the end of 2015 is to show how surveillance, once a signpost of authoritarian regimes, became a crucial pillar of modern liberal democracy, particularly, in the advancement and promotion of life. Conversely, by tracking the expansion of surveillance into other fields (from the health sciences and immigration to online marketing and law enforcement), I hope to illustrate how this same convergence of social, political and economic forces now threaten the very ideals that liberal regimes purportedly adhere to, namely, an individual’s right to privacy and secrecy. My methodological approach draws from the works of notable thinkers such as Foucault, Deleuze and Virilio.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
Due to the availability of specific research interviews, some sections of the research plan for 2014 have been moved forward to 2015. As a result, I intend to do these specific interviews and sections in 2015.

次年度使用額の使用計画 |
I intend to further field research in the US, Canada, Europe, Asia and the Middle East. In the year 2015, I will focus on issues of surveillance. This research will take me to Queens University in Kingston, Ontario as well as several research institutes in the United States (Washington, New York, etc.). I will be looking at various ways in which the processes of militarization are shaping the notions of Discreet War. I will also use the grant to purchase necessary equipment and materials for research and to support my travel and accommodation for international conferences and workshops.
