研究実績の概要

This year I collected quantitative and qualitative survey data from a population of Japanese university students. The purpose of the survey was to investigate how the term native speaker is understood, conceptualized and utilized in addition to exploring student beliefs and semiotic associations and values surrounding the term. This survey is based on the previous work of the author which examined student appraisal of teachers on the basis of native speaker status. The survey data collected from these students is intended to compliment the extensive data already collected from the JREC-IN recruitment advertisements within Japanese higher education. The majority of activity this year was spent designing, translating and administering the survey to a total of 250 students. The data collected is now being processed for analysis.

理由

I have met the goals that I set myself for the project this year. I was able to make two presentations in Finland on the topic of the native speaker within Japanese higher education, one at the Twenty-Sixth European Second Language Association (EUROSLA) International Conference and one at the Psychology of Language Learning 2 (PLL2) International Conference. I was also able to present project at in Singapore at the Seventh Centre for Language Studies International Conference (CLaSIC). The highlight of the year was being invited to present my project data and views at the American Association for Applied Linguistics (AAAL) 2017 Conference where I took part in a panel on 'Categorizations of Speakerhood: Reconciling the Damage and Searching for Solutions'. During 2016 I produced a number of publications based on the project (three book chapters). Overall, I was very pleased with the progress of my project this year.

今後の研究の推進方策

This year will be spent compiling and analyzing the collected survey data and producing further publications and presentation on the topic of the native speaker in Japanese higher education. In May I will travel to Deakin University in Melbourne to exchange data and plan some future events with an new research colleague. In August I will present at the European Association for Research on Learning and Instruction (EARLI) International Conference in Finland on the topic of native speaker representations in Japanese higher education. At the end of the year the survey data will be written up for a journal paper submission.
