The target of this project is to achieve crystalline mesoporous Ta3N5 for splitting water by utilizing sunlight with wavelengths up to 600 nm. In the past two years, mesoporous Ta3N5 has been synthesized by nitridation of mesoporous Ta2O5 (Guo, et.al, ACS Appl. Mater. Inter. 2013, 5, 11080-6; Guo, et. al, New J. Chem., 2014, 38, 5846-55). Various nitridation treatments has been used and many mesoporous Ta2O5 samples with different surface area have been also used as the raw materials, the corresponding mesoporous Ta3N5 samples have been evaluated by X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron scopy, TG-DTA and so on. The pure phase of mesoporous Ta3N5 can be synthesized by adjusting the nitridation time and temperature. The optimized condition for Ta3N5 has been obtained. Based on the as-prepared Ta3N5, the water reduction and oxidation of the sample under visible light has been evaluated. Then, the sample with highest performance was figured out. The sample was further modified by organic dyes for overall water splitting. Up to now, no water splitting results have been confirmed. In addition, we have been trying to modified the surface state of Ta3N5, which can further change the charge separation properties.
