A microfluidic method to evaluate cell deformability with phase decomposition has been developed and tested in FY2014, and has been applied in patients' cells research in FY2015. The relation between the deformability and diseases has be investigated through the collaboration with medical doctors. The preliminary results show that patients with cardiovascular diseases tend to have more distributed deformability of their red blood cells (RBC) because of greater variations of RBC size compared with healthy subjects. The proposed phase decomposition method successfully separates RBC deformability into stiffness-based and viscosity-based deformabilities.
An on-chip pressure sensor is also developed for assisting deformability evaluation in FY2015. The sensor mechanism and performance is published in Biomicrofluidics, a journal of American institute of physics.
