研究実績の概要 |
I collected water samples from Ara River (Saitama) and Ogasawara islands (i.e. Chichijima, Hahajima)in October 2014. Liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) method and a procedure for haloacetonitrile analysis were established in the lab successfully. A student under my supervision synthesized iron-based adsorbant, called ferrihydrite (Fh), and used it for treating Ara River and Ogasawara island lake waters. The treatment processes included microfiltration, microfiltration with Fh or powdered activated carbon (PAC). Haloacetonitriles and trihalomethanes were quantified with gas chromatography/electron capture detection. The student was graduated and will continue his Master's degree study in my lab. His work titled "Ferrihydrite adsorption to control membrane fouling and disinfection by-products in microfiltration of surface waters" was submitted to IWA Specialist International Conference on Natural Organic Matter in Water. The paper has been selected for an oral presentation on September 7-10, 2015 at Sweden. The program can be found at www.nom6.se. We are preparing for submitting this result to a peer-reviewed journal. I contacted Yamamoto-MS. Co., Ltd. to make a lab-scale electrochemical unit for ferrate production. The synthesized ferrate will be used the next stage of advanced water treatment process for Ogasawara island lake waters to reduce the level of disinfection by-products.

理由
The research progress is similar to what I planned. The water sampling at Ogasawara islands (managed by the local water treatment officers) was slightly delayed due to the impact of Typhoon. There was a trouble in the Electron Capture Detector (ECD)unit of the GC-ECD instrument, but it was fixed and works very well. I slightly modified the treatment process from UV-Ozone oxidation to ferrate oxidation due to high energy consumption and generation of different types of the disinfection by-products by the UV/Ozone process. The ferrate oxidation can be applied to the existing coagulation process, which is commonly used in Japan and other countries. I have a smooth contact to the Yamamoto-MS company and have a good discussion on the unit design. I contacted the oversea technical expert occasionally for his comments. A student is working hard, and I will recruit one or two more students from now.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
(1) I am preparing for publishing the results in the peer-reviewed journal. (2) I plan to collect water samples at Ogasawara islands with my student in during May 31st, 2015 to June 5th, 2015 to see the changes of water quality and disinfection by-product precursors in comparison with that of October 2014. (3) I am recruiting a student to work on ferrate oxidation treatment process with Ogasawara island lake waters. (4) Effectiveness of ferrate oxidation will be compared to the previously applied three processes (i.e. microfiltration, microfiltration-Fh and microfiltration-PAC) in relation to dissolved organic matter and dissolved organic nitrogen fractions treated.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
Reasons for incurring amount to be used in FY2015 is as follows: (1) one week sampling campaign at Ogasawara islands (number of attendants: 2) (2) payment to Yamamoto-MS company for the electrochemical unit (total cost is under estimated). The unit includes a power supply unit, steel plates and electrochemical chamber. (3) Registration and travelling cost to the conferences. (4) English proof for manuscripts prior to submission (3 papers planned). (5) Software and textbooks. (6) I need to purchase new note PC since my previous one is broken. (7) Chemicals and lab-use disposables.

次年度使用額の使用計画 |
Usage plan in an order of the reasons written above in FY2015: April: Chemicals and lab-use disposables, note PC / May: Payment for the electrochemical unit, software / June: Transportation and accommodation costs from Tokyo to/in Ogasawara islands / July-August: English proof for manuscripts, air ticket from Tokyo to Sweden and Tokyo to Beijing for the conferences, payment for conference registration fee / September: Accommodation at the conference venue / October: Chemicals and lab-use disposables / November-February 2016: English proof for manuscripts
