研究実績の概要 |
The main objective of the first year of this project was to develop the international collaborations which are needed for conducting fieldwork and combining the datasets collected on Adelie penguins around the Southern Ocean. Indeed, during the past first year of the project, we have been able to develop the collaborations as expected. First, we took the opportunity of gathering with our French colleagues at the Fifth International BioLogging Conference in last September to hold a meeting and set up the details of the upcoming field campaign. At that time we had already bought and received the 15 data loggers to be deployed on the field and could evaluate all together the potential for these loggers to improve our knowledge of penguins' habitat in this region of the Southern Ocean. Based on the ship schedule, fieldwork in Antarctica (at the French station Dumont D'Urville, in Adelie Land) lasted from December to February included. Deployment of the loggers on the penguins is now fulfilled as planned. These loggers will be recovered by the French team when the penguins will return from their winter migration to start a new breeding season, in October. Beyond the fact that this field session was completely succesful regarding this project, it has also been an opportunity for an important public outreach: an educative project involving children from around the world and the field researchers present on the station was carried out at that time, to which to PI took part. The PI is now back to carry on the analyses of the previously collected datasets.

2: おおむね順調に進展している
理由
The strong bonds between the research teams enabled effective collaboration, and consequently both the fieldwork and the analyses have been carried out as initially planned.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
A new element is to be mentioned for the second year of the project. The PI has been invited to join in May a workshop organized by the British Antarctic Survey, which is one of the collaborating teams in this project. The workshop will focus on techniques for modelling penguins’ at-sea distribution, and will gather international experts of this field. This topic fits nicely into the project, and this invitation will be an excellent opportunity to increase the value-for-money of this research. The analysis of the tracking datasets of penguins which are already available (from Japan) is expected to be finished this year, with a first paper produced from it. Moreover, data collected on the field in December-February will be presented, as expected, at the World Seabird Conference (in South Africa, in October). The presentation is already accepted. Finally, this second year shall see the recovery of devices from the surveyed birds coming back to Adélie Land. Previous studies let us expect recovery rates of the loggers of 70% after one winter at sea.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
The institution of the PI has been able to cover the costs of travelling abroad to carry out the fieldwork.
|
次年度使用額の使用計画 |
The total budget for FY2015 will be enough to cover the side costs implied by the invitation to the workshop in UK, the totality of the expenses for travelling and registering to the World seabird Conference 2 in South Africa, as well as the costs of publication of the first paper produced from the project (from the data already collected).
