We discovered that parasitism in the Phtheirospermum / alfalfa system can be suppressed by supplying the host plant with nitrogen. We also discovered that Phtheirospermum is first discovered carbon-feeding hemiparasite. Parasitism by Phtheirospermum can cause a 50% upregulation in photosynthesis.
