In this research, I have developped emotional walking patterns for biped humanoid robots (happiness, sadness, anger) and studied the effects of such patterns on human-robot interaction. This research aims to improve the co-existence between humans and humanoid robots in our future society, is a very useful research. In fiscal 2014, I have accomplished the following research goals: study the reactions of people to the movements of our robot, study the effect of the movements on the perception of the Uncanny valley (不気味の谷現象), study the acceptance of an emotional humanoid robot as a worker.
By showing the different emotional walking patterns to participants (on-line and in the laboratory), I obtained the following results: emotions affect the perception of the humanoid robot (for example, it appears more human-like), the appearance of the robot is more influential than the effect of the uncanny valley in determining acceptability of an emotional robot worker.
We have developed also a low cost system to measure the position in space of humans. This system will serve to measure the reaction to an emotion robot and its effects on the trajectory adopted by humans in space.
