昆虫の配偶システムと精子競争に関する研究

研究概要

最終年度はアワヨトウの相変異と精包サイズの関連性について研究を行った。鱗翅目の交尾の特徴は、オスがメスに精包を渡すことである。精包の機能に関してはほとんど分かっていないが、現在のところ2つの仮説が有力と見られている。ひとつは精包の中には精子や卵のための栄養分が入っており、父親の子に対する投資であるといものである。もうひとつはメスの再交尾を防ぐためにオスはメスに大きな精包を与えるという考え方である。これらのアイデア(特に後者)をテストするために、まず、アワヨトウの生産する精包の大きさがどのような条件によって変化するかを調べた。検討した条件は(1)オスの体重、(2)メスの体重、(3)幼虫の飼育密度(相)、(4)オスの日令、(5)オスの交尾間隔である。その結果、オスやメスの体重は精包のサイズにほとんど影響しなかった。そして、高密度条件下で飼育されたオス(群生相)は低密度区のオス(孤独相)よりも大きな精包を生産することがわかった。また、交尾しない期間が長いほど生産される精包が大きくなることが分かった。
次に、メスの再交尾率とはじめの交尾で受取った精包サイズとの関連性を実験的に調べた。既交尾オス(交尾後1〜2日)は小さな精包しか作らないこと、群生相は孤独相より大きな精包をつくることが上記の実験で分かっているので、交尾経験と相変異を利用して4つの組合わせで精包サイズを人為的にコントロ-ルし、第一回目の交尾をメスに行わせた。その後、未交尾オスと既交尾メスを飼育容器にいれ、再交尾までの日数を測定した。その結果、大きな精包を受取ったメスは再交尾までの時間が長くなることが明らかになった。群生相の生じる高密度条件下ではオス間の配偶者獲得競争が激しいと考えられ、その場合にはオスはメスの再交尾を防ぐために大きな精包を生産する、つまり条件戦略的に精包サイズを調節するのだろうと思われる。
