The locus coeruleus noradrenaline (LC-NA) system controls emotion and is implicated in psychiatric disorders. We've developed cell type specific molecular and circuit based perturbation and viral tracing approaches and and used them to study the role of the LC-NA system in aversive emotional learning and memory. In the last year we have finished tracing brain-wide afferent inputs to two projection defined LC-NA cell populations we've found to play opposing roles in aversive learning and extinction of aversive responding (Sulkes et al. 2023). In addition, we've identified opposing functional roles of distinct afferent inputs from prefrontal cortex in regulating fear extinction learning (Watanabe et al. in preparation). This work shows how LC-NA cell types are regulated by afferent inputs
