| Research Abstract |
We clarified infants' cognitive and perceptual development ; face cognition, pattern perception, and motion perception.
First, moving face effect on infancy was clarified. The topic of recent adult face study has been the moving effect on face recognition. The moving face provides additional information and makes face recognition easier for the human adult. With Prof.O'Toole, she is famous for her research on moving face studies ; we were trying to use this moving face technique in infant studies. We found that that the moving information made infants' face recognition easier.
Second, inversion effect was found on infants' gaze perception. On human social communication, perceiving the other persons' gaze direction is important. It is well- known that even young infants can perceive gaze direction and this property is specific for adapting a human communication system. But it is still not clear whether infants' gaze perception is the same as adult humans or not. In human adult cases recently several gaze illusions were found. For example, human adults can detect smaller distances in optical pattern but not in non-optical patterns. This means that human adults have hyper acuity in gaze perception. We used illusory figure of the gaze. This illusory figure can be perceived by human adults who have strong perceptual bias on gaze pattern. We found that infants could perceive this illusion, and this illusion was disappeared by inverted figure same as adult.
Third, infants' brain activity during face perception was clarified. By using NIRS (Near infrared system)system we clarified infants' brain activity during face perception.
