Research Abstract |
During their first year of life, infants' perceptual world undergoes dramatically change, especially in three-dimensional perception, which is important for survival in our environment. We investigated the developments of various kinds of three-dimensional information processing in infants. To perceive the three-dimensional world, horizontal and vertical binocular disparities are important. We showed that the properties in processing horizontal and vertical disparities are different, and that sensitivity to horizontal disparity is still premature at 27 weeks of age. To examine infants' sensitivity to a pictorial depth cue, we compared monocular and binocular preferential looking for objects with a depth specified by height-in-the-picture-plane. This showed that 4- and 5-month-old infants fixated on the lower, apparently closer, figure more often under the monocular than the binocular presentation, providing evidence of their sensitivity to the pictorial depth cue.
