Outline of Annual Research Achievements

本領域研究は、金属元素を立体制御、反応場、物性発現の場と捉え、未開拓であった金属錯体における非対称配位圏の設計・合成法と異方集積化法を理論・実験・計測により開拓することを目的とした。
具体的には、配位結合の分子レベル制御(分子アシンメトリー)に基づき、金属錯体ならびにその集積体(集積アシンメトリー)、空間構造(空間アシンメトリー)、電子状態(電子系アシンメトリー)の非対称性・キラリティー構築を図った。その結果、驚異の安定性を実現する四面体「不斉亜鉛」錯体、自発的な非対称分子組織化と光誘起過冷却液体化現象、史上最薄のプラスチックを創製、イオン性ナノ結晶の部分・全イオン交換による構造変態と応用、を始めとする研究成果が約1,500報の学術論文・総説・著書に発表された。これらの多くが領域内外の共同研究により行われ、さらには総括班が中心となって開催された「融合基礎・実習コース」や「若手勉強会」を通して若手人材育成が強力に推進された。
本領域研究は、「非対称性(アシンメトリー)」の化学を周期表の約8割を占める金属元素、特に最も困難とされていた置換活性金属錯体の「金属中心の不斉誘導」と「絶対配置の安定化」を実現し、集積型金属錯体「不斉金属の化学」を飛躍的に進展させた。この化学は、さらに周期表のすべての元素を対象とする「不斉元素の化学」や、可逆な動的結合により生じる「動的キラリティーの化学」に展開できると期待され、あらゆる物質科学に新たな潮流を起こすであろう。
