Outline of Annual Research Achievements

本研究は、東南極での測地・地形/地質調査や海底地形解析、衛星データ解析などにより、氷床変動に伴う固体地球の応答(GIA)モデルを高精度化し、過去から現在の氷床質量収支を明らかにすることで、氷床・海洋・気候の統合的モデル研究に資することを目的とした。
測地学的な成果として、昭和基地および周辺沿岸地域に加え、トロール(ノルウェー)、マイトリ(印)、ジャンボゴ(韓)、マリオズッケリ(伊)の各基地における絶対重力測定を実施し、重力時間変化勾配とともに将来の観測の基準となる重力値を得た。また、リュツォ・ホルム湾沿岸でのGNSS観測データから、GIAによる地殻変動速度の地域差を明らかにするとともに、南極大陸でのGNSSデータを解析することで、南極大陸全体でも同様の検討を試みた。これらは、現在のGIAの影響を見積る上で高精度な拘束条件を与えるものである。
一方、地質・地形学的調査では、リュツォ・ホルム湾沿岸やマイトリ基地周辺において、新規に開発した可搬型パーカッションピストンコアラーにより湖底コアの採取に成功するとともに、露岩域で採取した岩石試料の表面露出年代測定を実施し、最終氷期から完新世への全球気候遷移に伴った氷床後退の時期を明らかにした。これらの結果は、約3~4万年前の氷床荷重分布が従来考えられていたものの2倍にも達する可能性や、約9000年前から6000年前の完新世において急激な氷床高度低下が生じた可能性などを示唆しており、GIAモデル研究に不可欠な氷床融解史に新しい知見を与えるものである。
また、過去から現在に至るこれらの観測結果は、複数のGIAモデルを用いた研究により、関連するパラメータなどを調整することで矛盾なく説明できることを示した。このようなGIAモデルの改良は、衛星データ解析や他のモデル研究とも連携し、現在の南極氷床変動の解明や将来予測にも貢献するものと期待できる。
