Research Abstract

西部北太平洋に降下したアジア大陸起源エアロゾルから、鉄やその他の必須微量元素が、生物に利用可能な形でどの程度供給されるのかを明らかにすることを目的として、海洋表層における微量元素の動態とその生物利用能の解明を進める。
特に以下の3点に着目した研究を行う。(1)エアロゾルに含まれる微量元素の海水への溶解度を支配する要因は何か?(2)エアロゾルから溶出した微量元素は海水中でどのような物理的化学的形態をとるか?(3)植物プランクトンはどのような化学的形態の微量元素を利用し得るのか?
これらにより、従来は定性的把握に留まっていた大気由来の微量元素の溶解度および生物利用能について、制御機構の理解を含めた定量的な評価を可能にし、親生物元素循環や生物ポンプの理解に新たな見地を与え、気候変動に対する海洋の応答予測に資する。
