Outline of Annual Research Achievements

液体Hgは室温で水と同程度の粘性を示す液体金属であり、スピンホール物質であるPtと合金化しないため、流路中においてもスピンホール効果によってスピン流が注入できる。このときHgには、スピントルクと粘性により電流と平行方向に力が加わる。このようなトルクは電子スピン角運動量を運動へ直接変換するので、ナノ集積化可能であり、新しい動力エネルギー変換手法を与える。
今年度は、Hgで満たした2つの容器をPtの細管で繋いだ系を作製し、Ptに印加した電圧からスピンホール効果を通してHgを駆動させることに成功した(論文準備中)。
一方、巨視的流路にHgを流してスピン起電力を得る実験に関しては、渦運動の分布によって、Hg中の電子スピンが影響を受け、渦度の強い場所から弱い場所、すなわち管の内壁から中心に向かってスピン流が流れるという理論予想に基づいた実証実験を行い、直径数百ミクロンの細管にHgを流す際に生じる液体金属の渦運動を用いて、スピン流を生み出し、その結果生じる100 nVの電気信号を取り出すことに世界で初めて成功した。
この実証実験によって、電子スピンが、液体金属の渦運動と量子力学的に相互作用することが世界で初めて証明された。従来の電子スピンの制御には固体物質を用いてきたが、電子スピン研究に液体金属を利用できることが明らかとなった。
以上の結果を論文にまとめ、Nature Physics誌に掲載された。

Reason

初期の目標は十分に達成されたのみならず、次年度以降予定していたスピン流を通した電圧による流体駆動の測定も開始することができ、研究をやや前倒しで行っている状況である。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

本年度は、マイクロ流路を用いた角運動量変換の定量化・解析を行う。相反性により正/逆スピンホール効果を経由して流体運動とスピン流・電流の変換現象が予言される。このうち、流体金属の力学的駆動或いは界面フォノン(機械振動)の励起によりスピン流が生成され、逆スピンホール電圧が生じる現象はすでに我々により見出されており、その理論的解析も、一般座標変換について共変な形に固体中電子の量子力学を書き換えることで理論グループが進めている。一方、正スピンホール効果により流体を駆動することは、電子が本質的に持っている量子力学的なスピン角運動量を取り出して巨視的な現象へと反映させることであり、スピン科学の長年の夢であった。我々のスピントロニクス技術により、新しい動力原理・発電原理を提示する。
具体的には、微細流路中の液体金属を用いる。液体金属は粘性以外の変形抵抗を示さず、無限小のトルクから機械的応答が始まる。スピントロニクスを液体領域に拡張することにより、スピン角運動量を力学的運動に変換して利用することができる。液体Hgは室温で水と同程度の粘性を示す液体金属であり、スピンホール物質であるPtと合金化しないため、流路中においてもスピンホール効果によってスピン流が注入できる。このときHgには、スピントルクと粘性により電流と平行方向に力が加わる。予備評価によると、例えば1μm程度のHg流路厚で、Ptのスピンホール効果によりHgを10μm/s程度の速度に駆動できる計算になる。このようなトルクは電子スピン角運動量を運動へ直接変換するので、ナノ集積化可能であり、新しい動力エネルギー変換手法を与える。
