Research Abstract |
As international conflicts in rice policies and trade among Japan and major rice exporting countries such as Thailand and the United States have been intensified, this international comparative study of rice economy and policy among Thailand, the United States, and Japan has been conducted in order to study and compare rice economy and policy among these three countries from the view points of rice farm management, marketing, policy, labor use, land use, water use, technology and research and agricultural finance based on the field surveys in Thailand and the United States during 1985-1989. Based on the final reports of this research project in English and in Japanese and other related published papers by the participants of this project, we understand the differences in rice economy and policy among these three countries, and identify causes of the international rice policy and trade conflicts, and finaly find possible ways to mitigate the conflicts toward the direction of the harmonious international economic relationship.
