Research Abstract

Interview and questionaire surveys were conducted in Singapore, six major cities of Malaysia and Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei, to investigate recent changing nature of "Chineseness". Nearly 500 valid samples were collected through our research tour. The major results of the study are:
(1) Chinese people, equally both Chinese and English educated, tend to emphasize the role of Chinese language to identify themselves as being ethnic Chinese. (2) Malaysian Chinese have rather stronger ethnic identity because of their minority situation. (3) However, most Chinese, Particularly Singapore Chinese, recognize they are no longer "huaquiao" even though some of them still remain in traditional Chinese communities. (4) Quite a few Chinese expect preserving their own language and cultural activities contributes to being good citizens of Malaysia and Singapore, while Brunei Chinese seem to have little confident as their Malaysian and Singaporean counterparts have. (5) The regional difference in socio-political conditions seems the biggest factor for changing traditional "Chineseness".
