Research Abstract |
The current version of "Japanese Scientific Terms, Instrumentation Technology, compiled by the Ministry of Education" was published in 1973. With the remarkable advance of science and technology relating to this field in the past nineteen years, it has become necessary to update the vocabulary, adding new concepts and withdrawing those that have become obsolete. Terminologies must be chosen with care, since each term must have an identical meaning for all of its users ; the vocabulary should therefore be well-defined and not in conflict with language of the day. Toward these objects, survey research was started in 1990 by a committee with nineteen experts in these fields. The investigation can be divided into three items ; (1) regulation of the concept according to the hierarchical structure in the field of instrumentation technology, (2) classification of the branches, (3) fixing the vocabulary set as a draft of the revised version. The vocabulary of the draft version has been reported in book form. The number of terms is as follows : (a) terms inherited from the current version : 1877 (b) terms from the current version which have been modified : 146 (c) new terms added : 6032 (d) (terms withdrawn from the current version : 416).
