Research Abstract |
The aim of this research is an exhaustive study of MINSHINGAKU, music from China in Edo Period, from historical and musicological point of view. This study consists of three parts : firstly, collecting and sorting of the materials concerning the reception of MIN-GAKU and SHIN-GAKU ; secondly, reporting the activities of MINSHINGAKU-Society in Nagasaki between 1986 and 1990 ; thirdly, editing an anthology of MIN-GAKU and SHIN-GAKU. Some of the chief results of this research are as follows : 1) An accurate chronology of Ghi Shien (introducer of MIN-GAKU) and Ghi Ko (interpreter of MIN-GAKU) 2) A bibliographical study of the musical pieces in existing MIN-GAKU and SHIN-GAKU anthologies. 3) Elucidation of the present reception of MINSINGAKU a) the role of MINSINGAKU as a musical offering as well as a musical entertainment ; b) about 60 musical instruments available ; c) children's efforts to preserve this genre ; d) interview with Ms. Chiyoko Watase and Kira Nakamura, who are extant players of MINSHINGAKU ; e) literal transcription of the lessons by two instruments ; f) size and measurement of GEKKIN and MINTEKI ; g) possible derivation of MINSHINGAKU from Nanyin Music in Fukien. By this research we can set up a fundamental and theoretical ground in order to carry out a group research with Chinese scholars.
