Research Abstract

Theoretical and experimental studies on boiling two-phase flow of hexane based magnetic fluid with 50% mass concentration of manganese-zink ferrite particles are conducted in connection with the development of new energy conversion system utilizing the magnetic fluid.
The theoretical analysis of two-phase flow characteristics of magnetic fluid in a vertical pipe in a nonniform magnetic field is developed by using one-dimensional separated flow model and two-dimensional nonequilibrium dilute two-fluid model. It is clarified that the reasonable pressure increase is obtained to produce a fluid flow in a pipe by the application of nonuniform magnetic field.
The experimental studies are conducted to examine the results of the theoretical analysis. At first, hexane (boiling point(] SY.apprxeq.[)70<@D10@>D1C was selected as a carrier liquid. Then the effect of magnetic field on the pressure and temperature distributions of the boiling two-phase flow of the magnetic fluid is clarified.
The small test rig is constructed to demonstrate the new energy conversion system utilizing the boiling two-phase flow of magnetic fluid.
The experimental results of pressure rise are compared with the theoretical prediction and the reasonable agreement between them is obtained.
As a basic study related to the two-phase flow of magnetic fluid, theoretical and experimental studies on sound wave propagation in gas-liqued two-phase magnetic fluid in a magnetic field is also carried out.
