Research Abstract |
We examined the effect of eicosapentaenoic acid on immune function. 1. We examined the effect of EPA on natural killer cell activity as one of the immunological parameters. NK cell activity of humanlymphocytes and murine splenocytes were inhibited after in vitro and in vivo use of EPA emulsion. 2. The effect of EPA on antigen presentation was investigated. We have used antigen-specific helper T-cell clones that proliferate in the presence of antigen and spleen cells as antigen-presenting cells (APC). Dietary enrichment with EPA inhibited the ability of accessory cells to present antigen to murine helper T-cell clones, Th1 and Th2. 3. The effect of injection of EPA emulsion on the delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) response was investigated in mice. Mice were immunized with sheep red blood cells. The DTH response was depressed by the injection of EPA emulsion. 4. We examined the effect of EPA on interleukin-1 (IL-1) production of murine peritoneal macrophage. IL-1 production of peritoneal macrophage was inhibited after the infusion of EPA emulsion. 5. We also examined the effect of EPA on IL-1 production of human alveolar macrophage in the patient of sarcoidosis. IL-1 production of alveolar macrophage was inhibited after in vitro treatment of EPA emulsion.
