Research Abstract |
The Philippines is composed of the islands of Mindanao, Palawan, co***** Visayas and Luzon, with tropical, subtropical and temperate marine algal flora, respectively. It is generally believed that the marine algal flora is extended their distribution from the Philippine and Taiwan to the islands of Japan In 1985, the first survey was made in the Visayas. The second survey was carried out in the islands of Palawan, Cebu and Mindanao from October 1987 to February 1988. The third survey was carried out in the island of Luzon from November 1989 to February 1990. The present team has been carried on the summarizzed survey and arrangement of data of each subject in the islands of Lozon, Cebu and Palawan in July 1990. From these survey, many collections of benthic marine algae (blue greens, reds, browns, greens) has been kept in the herbarium of Kyoto, National Museum in Philippines, and the phytogeographical distribution of the marine algae in the Western Pacific has been made in clear. Specially, usefull seagrass and seaweeds of Sargassum, Gracilaria, Eucheuma and Laurencia have been done the studies on taxonomy and ecology by the members of this project. Formation of reproduction organ of seaweeds was observed on specimens after collecting. Net collections of marine phytoplankton, measurements of oceanographical factors such as water temperature and salinity has been done at all of the survey stations. Three members of Philippine phycologists have done the joint work in the survey, and have visited in several universities in Japan. The scien***** reports of this project will be published by the summarized book in near future.
