Research Abstract |
This research project looks into tbe. new trends in international relations from three aspects, namely (a) technology, (b) investment, and (c) foreign trade. The world economy today is going through a structural change of a very fundamental nature and we may attribute this to technological shift due to widespread application of electronics which is only achieved through investment at home and abroad. We draw heavily on the changes that are taking place in Japan in innovative activities, capital formation, and foreign trade and investment, which are compared with the experiences in other countries wherever deemed relevant. Part 1 of the research provides an overview of economic policy issues. Part 2 looks into research and development in general and C-C-C (computer. communication, and control) technology in particular. Part 3 looks into financing of new investment, capital stock vintage, and sources of growth. Part 4 is devoted to international trade, including trade in C-C-C related products and its impact on the balance of payments.
