Research Abstract |
In order to investigate the concept of Parmenides' "Being", I tried a 'plier method'. First I made an inquiry into the meaning of alpharhochieta of the Ionians and of psiupsilonchieta of the Pythagoreans. which I believe Parmenides inherited and transformed into his "Being". My conclusion is that the Ionians and Pythagoreans inherited not only their ancestral religious sentiment which is shown in the cult and rite of Dionysus who is killed to nourish living creatures, receives burial and then resurrects annually, but also an element of unexchangeable 'self' which is dramatically expressed in the wrath of Achilles in the Iliad. Secondly I planned to throw light from the arguments of philosophers after Parmenides, e.g. Empedocles, Anaxagoras, Atomists and Plato. Specifically my suggestion is that Socrates' life is an incarnation of Parmenides' belief in "Being". For he sacrificed his life to keep his personal and ethical identity. In parallel with the investigations mentioned above, I am preparing a new edition, translation and commentries on Parmenides' fragments, intending to show the Proem is the keystone to understand the function of "Being" in Parmenides' world-view.
