Research Abstract |
The purpose of this paper is to clarify the port town improvement by means of the study of 28 open ports in the Meiji era. Every port town was modernized, but now we can confirm many old port by field investigations. The result is as follows : 1.I referred to records, plans, maps about 28 open ports in the Meiji era. 2.Repairing harbors of the government enterprise by Kouwan-tyousa-kai or foreign engineers were several referred. I clarified the port town improvement by local government or social enterprise, so we can grasp the port town improvement totally. 3.There were three modern port town type of the harbor location to former town : (1)Adjacently located port town type(2)Non-located port town type (3)Separately located port town type. Those type were characterized by enterprise autonomy. Type (1) was by local government or social enterprise. type (2) was by the Government authorities, and type(3) was by the both. 4.There were four city component type of modern port towns : (1)Pier port type (2)Dock port type (3)Railway port type (4)Railway and dock port type. It was conformed that the former type changed to the latter in the Meiji era, and that there were various modern port town spaces of dock, canal, waterfront-road, warehouse, urban-axis to customs, station square and so on.
