Research Abstract |
Argyrophil cells are known to appear in the endometrial adenocarcinomas with an incidence rate of 20 %, although they are extremely rare in the normal endometrium. The author performed the immunohistochemical study of cytokeratin 7 and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) in the endometrial adenocarcinomas with argyrophil cells to clarify the mechanism of their appearance and their biological behavior. Cytokeratin 7 was negative in the gastrointestinal adenocarcinomas, but positive in the endometrial adenocarcinomas with or without argyrophilia. This showed that the appearance of argyrophil cellsin endometrial adenocarcinomas was not related to intestinal metaplasia. On the other hand, argyrophil cells in the endometrial adenocarcinomas were negative for PCNA, while they were present in all subpassaged tumors in nude mice. It was, therefore, postulated that argyrophil cells were induced through differentiation to neuroendocrine direction of neoplastic cells. The lack of proliferating activity in argyrophil cells is in accordance with the observation that the presence of argyrophil cells in the endometrial adenocarcinomas is generally of little or no prognostic significance. However, they are thought to account for malignancy in the neuroendocrine carcinomas of the cervix. Therefore, the difference in the biological behavior of argyrophil cells in the endometrial adenocarcinomas from that of those in the neuroendocrine carcinomas remains to be investigated.
