The purpose of this study is to find out the typical pattern of the housing-culture from a point of view of the preference of the house design. The items of this survey are as follows ; (1) the preference of the exterior form design, (2) the preference of the interior design of the guestroom, (3) the preference of the interior and exterior elements, (4) the preference of the name of housing-space, (5) the preference of the events of the year. Concernig the result of the analysis, 2 typical patterns are extracted as follows ; (1) the type of the preference for the traditional Japanese style ---this gruop likes the traditional Japanese style in the exterior from design and the interior design, the traditional interior elements (the shelf for Shinto tablets, the family Buddhist altar, Tokonoma, Tatami, etc.) and the traditional exterior elements, the traditional space (the continued Japanese Tatami-room, Chanoma, etc.), and the traditional events of the year, (2) the type of the preference for the contemporary western style --- this group likes the commercial colonial style in the exterior form design, the contemporary western style in the interior design, the contemporary western interior and exterior elements (a big table, a terrace, a lawn, etc.), the contemporary western space (a large living room, a hobby-room, etc.), and the contemporary western events of the year (the birthday, Saint Valentine's Day, Xmas, etc.) The type of the preference for the traditional Japanese style and the type of the preference for the contemporary western style are in relation that they deny mutually. The younger generation prefers the contemporary western style, and the loder generation prefers the traditional Japanese style. Urdan dwellers prefer the contemporary western style, and rural dwellers prefer the traditional Japanese style.
