| Research Abstract |
The Scientific Research Project on the Priority Area "Genome Informatics" aimed at developing new computational technologies for genome research on human and other organisms. Especially, the project focused on (i) the database problem of how to organize and integrate different types of data being produced by genome analyzes and (ii) the computational problem of how to decipher biological meaning encoded in the sequence data which is the final product by experiments. During the five year period, we published more than 100 original papers in addition to the three volumes of the Genome Informatics Series Proceedings. We also published a number of original and review papers, ducuments, pamphlets, and books in Japanese. The project has been instrumental in establishing the GenomeNet computer network as the informatics infrastructure for biomedical research in Japan and in nurturing the bioinformatics research community by regularly organizing workshops and tutorials. The basic research results, especially for the database problem, have been implemented as practical databases and software products that are internationally made available as a part of the GenomeNet database service.
