Research Abstract |
During the five month research period, we have developed a new packet routing algorithm for large-scale mobile ad hoc networks. This new algorithm has been compared experimentally with other existing routing algorithms for mobile systems. The experimental results show a considerable improvement in terms of scalability, as well as, energy consumption and success rate. In particular, our new algorithm uses an order of magnitude less control messages than existing approaches, with better scalability (i.e., the message complexity is lower than other protocols). In addition, our protocol requires much less local computations. We have just completed a detailed research report including all results, and we will soon submit the corresponding results for publication in an international conference and then in a journal. Although more preliminary than above, we have also begun to work on mobile ad hoc communication for groups of mobile robots. We are currently investigating the development of a self-stabilizing leader election algorithm for such systems. This problem, also know as the "eventual leadership", is a fundamental building block for solving fault-tolerant agreement problems in distributed systems. More concretely, this will allow groups of robots to reach common decisions (thus coordinate their actions) in a fault-tolerant manner. We expect to publish the corresponding results by the end of the civil year.
