| Research Abstract |
It was during the eighteenth century when the old communications media were abandoned and the new ones were created in order to intermediate between different types of addressers and addressees. This study intends to clarify the multiplicity and the vicissitudes of the media which were devised especially in Osaka, the center of commerce in Japam in the eighteenth century. To put it concretly, it inspects the freshness of the media created in Osaka competing to Kyoto and Edo, survaying the whole genre of the contemporary publications, which includes literaly works, practical publications, popular books for art and science, guide books for the theatrical world, picture books, and single-sheet block prints.
Konta Yozo, the head investigator compared the publishing business performed by kashiwara-ya Seiemon in Osaka with that of Suhara-ya Ichibei in Edo, in respect to the newness of the referent, of the authors, of the readers of their publications, and the newness of their activities trying to intermediate between them. Asano Hiroshi examined the legend of Ishikawa Goemon from the viewpoint of the appearance of the picaresque novel in Osaka, Kajikawa Nobuyuki investigated the traditions around the Imperial prince Otomo taking advantage of the topographies published during the eighteenth century. Kosaka Shiro studied the way how the Europian astronomy was received by Motoki Yoshinaga and Shizuki Tadao. Kishi Fumikazu inquired into the transformation of the midium-character of the illustrations put in such publications as "Meisho-annaiki" and "Meisho-zu-e". Hayashi Kimiko studied the media which convay the informations around the kabuki.
