Research Abstract |
The ultrastructure of water-clear cells has been described in human hyper plastic parathyroid glands. However, previous studies have failed to demonstrate this type of cell in normal human or other vertebrate parathyroid glands. 1. We recognized the water-clear cells in the parathyroid glands of the golden hamster and rabbit, but not recognized in that of the rat and japanese quail. 2.The effects of streptozotocin treatment on the chief cells and water-clear cells in the parathyroid glands of golden hamsters were investigated. In the water-clear cell, many lipid droplets were observed in the cytoplasm. These findings suggest that treatment of streptozotocin affects functional activity in the water-clear cells as well as in the chief cells of the parathyroid glands. 3. Ultrastructural localizations of glucose-6-phosphatase and nucleoside diphosphatase were observed in the rabbit parathyroid gland. Activities of both anzymes were not found on the rough endoplasmic reticulum of the chief and water-clear cells.
