Research Abstract |
An epidemiologic approach is very informative for the study of any chronic degenerative disease, including osteoporosis. The cohort study is indispensable to clarify the risk factors developing osteoporosis. We set the cohort in Miyama Village, Wakayama Prefecture, as two large national projects on cancer and circulatory diseases. Information on exposure to possible risk factors were collected through a self-administered questionnaire. Once a year, they received health check up examinations in relation to cancer and circulatory diseases. A list of inhabitants aged 40 to 79 years in the village was compiled based upon resident registration as of December 1988,1543 inhabitants consisting of 716 males and 827 females were identified. As the subset of this cohort, 50 males and 50 females in each of four age strata (40-49,50-59,60-69,70-79) totaling 400 individual were selected randomly. Bone mineral density was measured using dual energy absorptiometry (DEXA). Routine two-dimensional radiographs are also being performed.cord linkage system was established among these information. Based on follow-up study if this cohort, association between osteoporosis and other risk gactors will be analyzed in the future.
