Research Abstract |
Research on Gapscapes and Gapspaces has continued its focus on the Japanese perception of space and landscape. In two field trips to Tokyo's Shibuya district in February (where visual data was gathered around the central station area) a contemporary urban area was observed. Simultaneously, bibliographical research was made in order to have an historical outline of such contemporary urban spaces. Primarily, these bibliographical sources were restricted to a possible Japanese cultural specificities and background on landscape perception. The case of landscape painting is an indicator of the importance of the concepts of the gap and the void in the composition of a painting. The element of the"yohaku"seems essential in painting as a structural void or gap that helps compose and create notions of depth and distance. This relation between Japanese landscape painting and gaps is probably applicable to the urban space in Japan. Another important finding is in the work of geographer Yi-Fu Tuan

. Of particular interest in Tuan's work on both human and cultural perceptions of landscape, is his mention to the term"Escapism". The idea Tuan develops around the concept of Escapism seems in my view to be deeply connected with the concepts of Gapspaces and Gapscapes. A presentation of the concepts of Gapspace and Gapscape was scheduled with professor Tuan and held on the 23^<rd> of March at the University of Madison, Wisconsin, after which took place a discussion on their importance and impact on urban space. Some the topics discussed such as the ability of gaps to preserve peace and avoid conflict in the elements composing the city was referred as being of value to the fields of urban planning in particular and by extension, in the field of geography. Finally throughout this research trip to the United States, several urban Gapspaces in Chicago, New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco were surveyed. The results of this survey will serve as a comparative basis for the continuation of the study on the impact of gaps in both Japanese and Western citi Less
