Research Abstract |
Waseda University Silk-road Expedion Team caried out general surveys in Turfan three years. While each member individually studied his own major such as art history, ancient manuscripts and oriental history, we devoted our energy to excavate Gou-xi (****)group tombs, west of Jiao-he cheng (********), as our common field.at the same time. The Gou-xi tombs include many groups of old tombs of front Che-Shi (********) and Han (**) upper class people. The number reached as many as 2000 in all. We made fundamental researches and excavations as to these mounded tombs. Fundamental research (1) Measuring and mapping (1/500) of the whole Gou-xi (****) site (2) 250m square mapping of the group tombs in Gou-xi (****) site (3) A thourough research including shape, size, present condition, and so on, of all tombs. The three year thorough research has already finished, and we are now making lists of relics and sites to computerize whole data and open homepage supported by Waseda university. Last year, we excavated hill top which was located at the highest level and least influenced by moisture, but nowhere presented us any important organic materials. At last Professor Okauchi found out front Cheshi moundless tombs at the northeast of the terrace, where he discovered Wu-zhu qian (******). This convinced him of the existence of Han period tombs, and we excavated three tombs from Sept.7. As a result, gold relics like brooch, crown or choker and ring, south sea shell plates and a bronze mirror were unearthed from the first tomb. Gold hair and leg ornaments, buckle were excavated at number 17 tomb. This means that we have got one set of gold ornament belonging to the Cheshi nobility. Three years of steady efforts enabled us such a brilliant archievement like this.
