Research Abstract |
Our group supervising "the Information-based Studies in the History of Okinawa, " one of the Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research on Priority Areas Supported by the Ministry of Education, had two aims : one was to steer the direction of our Specific Research (Tokutei kenkyu) ; the other was to sngage in the coordination and exchange of information between study groups in change of different research areas. We held, for example, group meetings, sponsored meetings between representatives from each study group to supervise the progress of research within each group and to exchange information. A number of meetings were held at various institutions such as the University of Tokyo, Kyoto University, Tsukuba University and Okinawa International University, as well as at a number of public forum in Kagoshima, Nagasaki, Hirado, Naze for the purpose of presenting the results to the public and improving relationships between researchers. In addition, we have published 7 issues of our newsletter,

"Historical Information about Okinawa, " and 29 issues of mini-newsletter, "Hisen, " which contains research and technical information, reports of study meetings and research results. We established a homepage at Osaka International University for Women (URL : http : //www.okinawa.oiu.ac.jp/), as the center of an information network for reports and announcements of study meetings, and making both interim and final research results available to the public via the internet. Our group also supervises and stores information about Okinawa that was collected in surveys conducted by each study group and that we have compiled into two databases : "Research Literature on Ryukyuan/Okinawan History" and "A Collection of Locations of Documents on Ryukyuan/Okinawan History." The former now includes approximately 70,000 records. Our supervisory group also co-worked with study groups engaging in Research Projects (Keikaku Kenkyu) such as "The History of Ryukyuan/Okinawan Diplomatic Relations, " "A Study of the Structure of the Ryukyu Dynasty, " and "A Study of Okinawan Society, " in order to construct a text-database of major historical sorces such as "The Chronicle (Rekidai Hoan), " "Ryukyu Genealogy (Ryukyu Kafu), " and "Ryukyuan Industrial Systems (Ryukyu Sangyo Seido Siryo)." Our joint work with a group named the Material Group (Bunbutsu-han) studying Okinawa's historical materials in their Research Project (Keikaku Kenkyu) "Digitalization of Ryukyuan/Okinawan Historical Materials, " resulted in the development of a visual database "A Collection of Ryukyuan Historical Documents." This database comprises approximately 400,000 microfilmed pictures. Now under construction is a database system through which we can make these micro-film pictures available on the Internet to the public, and to other researchers outside our groups. Less
